There are many plusses to life without refined sugar, namely the significant improvement in the way you feel. But currently there remains a significant downside – you’ll miss out on eating cakes and puds that other people make. Especially when you go out to cafes and restaurants.
Despite the health crisis we’re facing as a result of our refined sugar consumption, oddly there’s still very little free from refined sugar that’s actually available out there, especially if you want to enjoy a cake with a cuppa in a café or a dessert with a restaurant meal. This is the case even living in Bristol, which is an especially innovative, foody city.
……..hence the Cake Crusade!
I’m on a wee one woman cake crusade to encourage chefs and bakers in my local cafes and restaurants to rise to the thrill and the challenge of making delicious cake without the usual main show ingredient. When I visit cafes, I give out a booklet of recipes in the hope that it will set their sugar free cake imagination alight.
It’s a drop in the ocean, I realise - just a humble crumb in an Infinite Sponge, but it’s something, and the response I’ve received so far has been positive.
If you’d like to see more healthy alternatives to the usual refined sugar cakes on offer in cafes - please join me in asking for it. The more of us who do, the more likely the day will come when we can have our (healthier) cake and eat it.
